最大のセールスポイントが「目に良い」という点。なかには「視力改善に効果がある」と踏み込んだ宣伝をしている業者もある。

だが、結論から言ってしまえばブルーベリーが「目に良い」ことはない。ブルーベリーに多く含まれるポリフェノールの一種「アントシアニン」が、人間の目の網膜に含まれるロドプシンという物質の合成を助けるというのが「目に良い」の根拠だが、それについての有意性のあるデータはない。

そもそも、目に良いと視力がよくなるという意味はまったくの別物で、目が悪くなったら眼科に行くべきだ。ブルーベリーで老眼が治ったり、緑内障が良くなったりすることはない。

視力が良いとされる科学的根拠は見つかっていないという現実は押さえておく必要があるだろう。
